Early Years & Playwork Qualifications Database

Department for Education and Skills

Early Years & Playwork Qualifications home

The Department for Education and Skills is committed to high quality care, education and play for all children and young people. This level of provision:

  • enhances children and young people’s social, emotional and intellectual development;
  • promotes children and young people’s welfare in a safe and secure environment;
  • gives confidence to parents and carers in early years and playwork settings.

The information on this website allows:

  • Ofsted Child Care Inspectors (CCIs) to judge whether early years and playwork providers meet the national standards relating to staff qualifications;
  • employers and practitioners to identify which qualifications are suitable for specific job roles within early years and playwork settings;
  • child carers who wish to be approved under the Childcare Approval Scheme to determine whether the qualifications and/or training held by the child carer meets the requirements.
Department for Education and Skills

CWDC administer this web site on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills.

The Early Years, Childcare and Playwork: Qualifications web site (previously the Children’s Workforce: Qualifications website) has been developed by DfES and partners to support individuals and employers in identifying appropriate training and development for particular job roles in early years and playwork. It also provides guidance to Ofsted Inspectors, employers and practitioners about how specific qualifications meet the existing requirements of the national standards for under 8s day care and childminding. Information on the national standards can be found on the following DfES Sure Start website: http://www.surestart.gov.uk/publications/?Document=153

The CWDC will continue to map new qualifications to the database as and when agreed with our partners. Awarding bodies should contact Sophie Lowles sophie.lowles@cwdcouncil.org.uk for more details on this.

The CWDC is working with its partners in the Children's Workforce Network to develop an Integrated Qualifications Framework for the children's workforce. The Integrated Qualifications Framework aims to create maximum opportunities for members of the children's workforce to develop their careers and use prior learning and experience to move both vertically and laterally across and within different areas of work. Over time this database will develop to reflect both the Intergrated Qualifications Framework and CWDC's emerging Sector Skills Agreement and Sector Learning Strategy.
