Information about: Childcare Approval Scheme

The Childcare Approval Scheme is a voluntary scheme providing recognised national status for people who care for children in the child's home or who care solely for children older than seven in another domestic setting. Parents using approved childcarers can, provided they are eligible, claim financial support through the tax credit system or employer-supported childcare.

For more information and an application form please go to the Childcare Approval Scheme website.

One criteria for approval is to hold a suitable childcare qualification. Suitable qualifications cover:

  • principles of good practice in Child Protection;
  • good health and safety practice;
  • food hygiene;
  • providing suitable activities for children of different ages;
  • an awareness of equal opportunity issues.

All approved childcare qualifications contain these elements. To find out if your qualification meets these criteria go to the approved childcarer qualifications.

If it does not, or you do not have a qualification, you can satisfy the criteria by attending an induction course. To find a course go to the Childcare Approval Scheme website.
