Criterion 1 - Care, learning and play

Level 2 criterion 1: Care, learning and play (National Standard 3)

Implement planned activities to develop children's emotional, physical, social and intellectual capabilities

EY = Early Years criteria P = Playwork criteria

Criterion 2 - Environment

Level 2 criterion 2: Environment (links with National Standard 4: Physical environment and National Standard 5: Equipment).

Maintain safe, secure and suitable environment when undertaking planned activities to promote children’s development. Use selected furniture, equipment and toys ensuring they conform to safety standards.

EY = Early Years criteria P = Playwork criteria

  • EY221 Maintain the safety and security of children and their environment, deal with emergencies, accidents and injuries
  • EY222 Maintain an attractive, stimulating and reassuring environment
  • P221 Support safety in the play setting and maintain children’s safety during play
  • P222 Deal with accidents and emergencies
  • P223 Help organise a setting for children’s play

Criterion 3 - Safeguarding and protecting children

Level 2 criterion 3: Safeguarding and protecting children (links with National Standard 6: Safety; National Standard 7: Health and National Standard 13: Child Protection).

Maintain the safety and security of children within the childcare setting and on outings. Ensure proper precautions are taken to prevent accidents and supervise children at all times. Carry out procedures to maintain the good health of children, prevent the spread of infection and deal with them when they are ill or need medication. Support the protection of children from abuse.

Criterion 4 - Inclusivity

Level 2 criterion 4: Inclusivity (National Standard 9: Equal opportunities and National Standard 10: Special needs).

Understand and implement the equal opportunities policy. Plan activities and play opportunities to enable all children to participate irrespective of any special needs and disabilities.

Criterion 5 - Behaviour

Level 2 criterion 5: Behaviour (National Standard 11).

Understand and can manage a wide range of children’s behaviour in a way which promotes their welfare and development.

Criterion 6 - Working in partnership with parents and carers

Level 2 criterion 6: Working in partnership with parents and carers (National Standard 12).

Work in partnership with parents to meet the needs of the children, both individually and as a group. Exchange information about the care and education of children with parents and carers and within confidentiality agreements.
